Visit to Ballymun Library for Engineer’s Week
Yesterday we visited Ballymun Library to celebrate Engineers Week, and it was a fantastic learning experience for all the children.
We were lucky to hear from Eilish Funston, an engineer with Dublin City Council, who spoke to us about “A Day in the Life of an Engineer.” She explained the wide variety of engineering roles and shared what her typical workday looks like. It was really interesting to learn how engineers approach problems, plan projects, and think carefully about the best way to design and build things that people use every day.
After the talk, we took part in a hands-on activity where we worked in teams to build structures using only spaghetti and marshmallows. This challenge encouraged us to think like engineers: planning our designs, testing our ideas, and adapting when things didn’t quite go as expected.
Throughout the activity, we learned a lot about teamwork, creativity, and the importance of testing and improving designs. It also gave us a real insight into the thought process engineers go through when designing or building something new.
A big thank you to Ballymun Library for hosting the event and to Eilish Funston for sharing her experience and inspiring the next generation of engineers.
